School Transportation in Jeddah

Abstract. 

  The main objectives of this study are: to examine and evaluate the relation between the students home and school locations; to examine the socio-economic characteristics of students; and to define the effect of these factors in the selection process of transport mode. Also the study tried to find travel distance and cost of school transport, who drive the students. The study first examined the role of the family in the selection of home and school site and how this process is affecting the selection of transport mode.

   Also the study has examined the role of Educational Departments and their criteria which are used to decide schools locations and the roles which other governmental agencies play (such as Ministry of Transport, Municipalities, Traffic Department) in relation to traffic control, and regulating the transport sectors.

  The study found that about 45% of students walk to school a distance up to 1.5 km, while 55% use different modes of transport especially private car. The study found that family size, sex, cost, travel distance are important factors in selecting school transport modes. The study developed different models to classify transport mode and cost structure, and to support the family decisions in selecting the proper school transport mode.


  The study has concluded that the State should be involved in developing, controlling and supporting school transport system. There is a need to evaluate school location, provision policy and to use small schools model instead of large school buildings to ensure good distribution of school locations to reduce walking distance.
