Abstract
The use of GIS in determining the most appropriate landfill sites in Madinah ALMonawarahThis Study aims at utilizing GIS techniques to assess the location of the public landfill sites and to suggest new and more suitable locations. Also the study tries to determine the viability of the soil of Al Madina area to accommodate landfillsites of hazardous wastes. It also runs after producing a digital map revealing the best and safe waste burial sites that conform with the principles of the Basel Convention regarding the choice, design and operation of public burial waste sites in the severe drought areas.
By using the available data obtained from the study area and the GIS and remote sensing tools and techniques, the required standards of the public burial sites are derived and converted into maps representing the most important criteria of geological, geomorphological , social, economic and environmental requirements and standards of public acceptance. These standards have been processed using the tools of spatial and statistical analyses which become the base for a digital information that allowed for building the suitable cartographic model, and for identify optimal locations suitable for safe landfill sites of hazardous wastes.
The study consists of five chapters, the first chapter is the introduction, the second chapter is allotted for theoretical framework and literature review of previous studies. Chapter three focuses on the methodology and procedures of the study followed by chapter four that discusses the assessment of the suitability of the current location of buried waste, and determines the best alternative sites to burry hazardous wastes. Chapter five, the final one, contains the study conclusion and recommendations suggested by the author in which she raised the point that it is crucial to raise the level of waste management in the city of Al Medina ALMonawarah.
The study concludes that the current landfill sites are of low standards. Measured against the quality standards set by the study, the standard of the current burial sites conforms with only one standard which is that of the distance from the airport, but it violates all other Basel requirements and standards. The study also found that only 2% of the territory of the study area is optimal for the establishment of future landfill sites of hazardous waste that conform with the international terms of Basel convention. The cartographic study suggests three alternative sites seen as valid for a safe and healthy landfill sites of hazardous wastes. These suggestions are hoped to enable those in charge to formulate engineering controls, including burying without damaging environmental, natural and human resources in the area.
