Abstract
Calculation of surface evaporation and alteration of the surface area of Lake Habbaniyah - Iraq using remote sensing and GIS

The surface area of Habania western Iraq is calculated using a combination of thermal imag and empirical equations: thornthwaite , Evanov and the penman equation as modified by Linacre.
The surface area of the lake was extracted using the normalized Difference water Index (NDWI). The surface temperature of the Lake was calculated using band 10 and 11 on board Land sat8.
The maximum surface temperature of the lake rcached a maximum of 30° in gune and a minimum 5°c in February. The annual evaboration rates from the lake during the study period were around 10 , 2152 and 2312mm.
As calculated with the thornthwaite, Evanov and Linacre equations. respectively water evaporation budget from the lake calculated with the water budyget was 2324 mm for the water the gear 2016/2017. Results show that the annual evaporation volume from the lake 500*106 m³ which is large and should be minimized.
