Levels and Trends of fertility in North Gaza Governate :
A study in Population
Abstract
This study aims to examine levels and trends of fertility in north Gaza governorate from 1997 to 2011. The study was divided into five chapters; the first discussed the natural and human features in north Gaza, while the second chapter talked about the demographic structure in north Gaza governorate. Chapter three showed fertility levels and trends in the governorate, chapter four tackled the factors that affect fertility and finally fifth chapter was about estimating fertility size and trend in the future and the impact of some other factors in the governorate.
According to Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics in 2007, fertility rate in north Gaza was 155.2 per 1000. The highest rate was in countryside as it was 184.4 per 1000, then in urban it was 157.5 and 140.9 in camps. Total fertility rate among women in north Gaza was 4.3 children according to population and houses statistics in 2007, and statistics showed that reproduction rate was 2.7 females. On the other hand, age average of first marriage in 2007 was 26.1 for males and 20.3 for females, while in 2011, such rate decreased in north Gaza as it was 22.9 for males and 19.1 for females.
Study results:
1. Marriage life in north Gaza is long regardless the hard economic conditions and closures.
2. There is an effect for the long marriage life that the woman spends when she is in the child-bearing age as the number of born children increases with the increase of marriage life.
Study recommendations:
Conduct more demographic studies about residents in north Gaza governorate by different institutions and ministries in the Palestinian Authority to treat social and cultural changes.
Encourage continuity of education for both genders as it helps in rising marriage age, inculcating women’s awareness about pregnancy and delivery, establishing family, and decreasing fertility period for females.
Include the concept of reproductive health in curricula or hold awareness campaigns for females about their future as mothers and enlighten them that their reproductive behavior determines fertility trends in the Palestinian society in the future.
