Abstract
The present study deals with
the Geomorphology of playa plains in the Farafra Depression. This depression
extends between Lat. 26° 00′ and 27° 45′ , and Long, 27° 00′ and 29° 15′
E. The study area covers about
14000 Km2 , and includes three interrelated depressions, named: El-Farafra,
El-Obayed and Ain-Dallah, from east to west respectively. The playa is defined
as a plain composed of horizontally stratified sediments that previously
transported by both surface runoff and wind deposition. Playa sediments were
previously depostied in water bodies (lakes and ponds) that occupied an
enclosed basins (Farafra, El-Obayed, and Ain Dallah). These water bodies
developed during the pluvial phases of the Quaternary. Playa surfaces are
mostly barren and dissected into yardangs by wind abrasion and deflation.
The distribution of
Playa plains is studied, and mapped using aerial photographs, topographic and
geological maps, and MSS images. About 116 playa plains are detected, and about
30% of these playas are checked in the field study. Their coordinates are
plotted using GPS Navigator instrument. The aerial photograph interpretation
map, GPS location map, contour maps, and geological maps are digitized using
AutoCAD and handled using GIS techniques.
Thickness of playa
deposits, its stratigraphy and structure, were studied in the field by
measuring several sections. It was also sampled from several locations, of
which 16 samples were analyzed. Gunna, White Desert, Penguin, Murr, and Krawien
playas received special interest. Their sedimentological, geochemical,
mineralogical and grain surface feature characteristics were studied. Grain
size analysis (wet saving), petrographic and Scanning Electron Microscope
techniques are also used.
Playa landforms were
studied. Yardangs –which are the most common and important feature in the playa
landscape- were studied. Length, width, height and orientation were recorded
for about 426 yardangs in the field.
It was found that the
playa deposits are generally situated in the low- lying areas. Their elevation
ranges between 21-100 m .
(asl.).
Grain size analysis of
playa deposits revealed that these deposits range between medium sand and
medium silt. It consists of white to yellowish calcareous beds, and grey or
greenish silt, alternating with aeolian sand, sandy silt and silty sand beds.
They are well to poorly sorted, Fine to strongly coarse skewed, and platykurtic
to platykurtic.
The relationships between size parameters indicate that there are two distinctive depositional environments could be distinguished. These are: Lacustrine (medium to shallow water bodies-represented by loam and silty sand beds respectively), and aeolian environments. Discriminated functions of (Sahu, 1964) show hat they were deposited in shallow marginal environments of deposition (e.g., Lakes, Ponds… etc.) with a significant role of turbidity currents. In some stages of deposition, aeolian processes prevailed, giving rise of quartz among the samples.
On the other hand, aeolian processes prevailed during dry seasons and arid phases. Chemical analysis revealed that playa sediments consist of calcium carbonate, silica, aluminum oxide, magnesium and sodium. Mineralogically, the petrographic analysis show that playa deposits consist of calcium carbonate, quartz as main components. Other minor amounts of gypsum, iron oxides, and feldspars also recorded.
Furthermore playa deposits contain amounts of organic matters, mostly because of plant remnants that noticed in the field as paleosoil horizons interbeded within the playa deposits. X-Ray Diffraction analysis supported the above mineral and chemical analysis. It revealed that the calcite (calcium carbonate) and quartz are the main and secondary components of playa deposits. Other minor elements are detected (e.g. kaolinite and dolomite) Different sedimentological structures are observed within playa deposits (e.g., horizontal bedding, cross bedding, mud curls, root casts, and unconformity).Abundant Foraminifera species were found in these deposits. It seems to be reworked and transported to the playa from older formations in the study area.
Other microfossils were observed, but they need to be distinguished. The present study didn’t offer a new specific dating for of the playa deposits in the study area. Although, two aeolian sand beds were defined within loamy playa deposits. These beds are capable to be dated using TL. technique. It may need to be handled by further detailed study. Two different levels of playa deposits were detected in the Penguin(1) playa of El-Obayed depression for the first time. They are similar to equivalent levels previously noted by (Donner, et al., 1999) inSouth Farafra playa.
Therefore, the present study supports Donner's idea, which supposed that there are two types of playa plains dating back to: - Pleistocene: represented by upper yardang level, that might be deposited in a wide extensive lake occupied the northern part of Farafra depression floor. - Holocene: contains the shallow water deposits widely distributed in the lower parts of the area. Scanning Electron Microscope photographs show that the quartz grain surfaces are characterized by the following features:

Scanning Electron Microscope photographs show that the quartz grain surfaces are characterized by the following features:
- Frosting (Dimmed) surface, as a
result of mechanical weathering, wind abrasion or because of desert varnish
accumulation.
- Pitted surface with deep holes. (chemical weathering and
solution). (1) A playa was encountered in El-Obayed depression, and named by
the author.
V- shape holes and upturned
plates, because of aeolian abrasion. - Silica, Iron oxides, and gypsum were
precipitated over the grain surfaces and inside its micro-depressions and
holes. Playa surface exhibits the following geomorphological landforms:
- The first, which is the most
common, is the extensive flat plains.
- The second is the parallel,
longitudinal ridges called yardang, which has been studied in detail. Other
Irregular longitudinal, conical, domal, mud pillars, and mushrooms, are also
detected. Yardangs are mostly oriented in N/S directions (parallel to the
present day dominated wind). Another conspicuous orientation of yardangs also
recorded in E/W direction that belongs to previous westerly wind that might be
dominated during the Pleistocene arid phases.
- Other important landforms are
also recorded, (e.g. sand sheets and dunes, lunettes, spring mounds, and wave
cut notches. According to surface characteristics and landforms, the present
study classified the playa plains in the Farafra area into the following
types:
1. Dry loamy playa, dissected into
yardangs (Gunna playa)
2. Dry, dissected muddy playa, (North Farafra playa).
3. Mud, dry, and less dissected
playa, (N.E. Krawien playa).
4. Salt encrusted, mud playa with
puffy surface, (Dallah playa).
5. Dry surface playa with plant
remains, (Rajeh, Krawien playa). The Playa plains appear to be developed
through different periods of humidity and draught phases that succeeded during
the Quaternary (Pleistocene and Holocene). Duri-crusts have been precipitated
over the yardang surfaces during pluvial or wet period that follow the yardang
formation by previous westerly wind. Studying of playa deposits stratigraphy,
and characteristics, in addition of the formation of yardangs and its crusts,
suppose the following playa stages:
- Long dry period. might dominated
at the begging of Quaternary time, as outlined in some previous studies.
- Short lacustrine deposition
period (Loamy Playa 1).
- Dry phase (Aeolian sandy
deposits). - Long lacustrine deposition period (thick well bedded loam, Playa
2). The above mentioned playas could be formed during the Pleistocene according
to their sedimentological characteristics, but it needs to be dated using TL.
techniques. - The most recent playa plains have been formed through three
pluvial or wet phases, separated by other arid phases, during the Holocene
time. - The drought increased during the Holocene period and the present shape
of the yardang has been achieved.
