Abstract
The Isolated Hills in the Baharia oasis
Depression "A Geomorphological study "
The Bahariya
Depression is considered a large anticline, extending along 94 km from the
northeast to the southwest . It has a maximum width of about 42 km. It is located
between latitudes of 27° 48’ and 28° 30’ N, and longitudes of 28° 35’and 29°
10’E. Following the 200m contour line, the depression has a total area of
approximately 2,099 km2. The isolated hills are the most prominent topographic
feature, which distinguishes it from other Western Desert depressions.
The aims of this
study is to study isolated hills in the Bahariya Depression from a
geomorphological perspective. The study includes four chapters, preceded by an
introduction and ended by a conclusion:
The introduction:
Described the location of the study area, screening the literature review
relevant to the study, highlighting the drivers of selecting isolated hills as
a study focus, objectives, data sources and methods, and finally study phases.
• First chapter: Focused
on describing the main geological characteristics (i.e. rock formations,
structure and geological development), topographic, climatic, and biological
conditions.
• Second chapter: Dealt
with the geographical distribution of hills and their morphometric
characteristics and classification.
• Third chapter:
Determined the factors affecting the formations and development of the hills.
It is demonstrated that the most significant factors are rock formation,
basaltic flows, weathering, landslides, and wind. At the end of this chapter,
Mandesha Hill was selected as a case study.
• Chapter Four:
Concerned with the applied geomorphology related to the isolated hills by
highlighting the role of human exploitation, which are varied between natural
reserves in the three different sites (Al-Dust, Al-Magrpha, Mandisha and the
Black Desert). This chapter also highlights the role of man as a
geomorphological agent, as represented in urban encroachments, quarrying and
mining in hilly areas.
• Conclusions: summarized
the key findings of this study and made some comprehensive recommendations
