ABSTRACT

  In Bangkok, primary and junior high schools are under the jurisdiction of several ministries and Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA). Due to this complicated jurisdictional structure, school planning has never been implemented in cooperation with all the related agencies. School databases are scattered allover the agencies, and those are not integrated into digital format together, thus comprehensive school location analysis using GIS has never been carried out.

   From 2002 September, the compulsory education will become nine years from the current six years. In accordance with this government policy, it is an urgent subject to construct school buildings in order to meet new students’ demand; however, the procedure of locating new schools is not smoothly and effectively executed because of the complex jurisdiction system.

Abstract

   This thesis is an attempt to automate a portion of the paper map conversion process.This includes replacing the manual digitization process by computer assisted skele-tonization of scanned paper maps. In colour scanned paper maps various features on the map can be distinguished based on their colour. This research work differs from the previous research in the way that it uses the Delaunay triangulation and the Voronoi diagram to extract skeletons that are guaranteed to be topologically correct. The features thus extracted as object centrelines can be stored as vector maps in a Geographic Information System after labelling and editing. Further more, map updates are important in any Geographic Information System. This research work can also be used for updates from sources that are either hard copy maps or digital raster images. The extracted features need manual editing in order to be usable in a Geographic Information System. This involves manual gap filling and clutter removal. A prototype application that is developed as part of the research has been presented. This application requires a digital image as input and processes it to produce skeletons or boundaries of objects. This research work can be further extended by considering automated gap filling in the extracted features.

Abstract. 

   The paper is a review of the map projection theory and applications all over the world and in Croatia. First of all, cartography is shortly presented as a discipline dealing with foundation, production, promotion and studying of maps. Theory of map projections is a branch of cartography studying the ways of projecting the curved surface of the earth and other heavenly bodies into the plane. After a brief review of the history of map projections the paper gives the general outline of map projections and persons dealing with their theory on the territory of Croatia. In addition, the problem of the state map projection selection, which is one of the basic issues of the Croatian official cartography, has been explained.
