Landslide Susceptibility Assessment Using Geomorphologic Information and GIS in Wadi Assal Basin, Southern Jordan
Samer Al- Nawaiseh, Department of Geography, Faculty of Arts, Yarmouk University, Irbid, Jordan.
Abstract
This study aims to assess the landslide susceptibility in the basin of Wadi Assal, Southern Jordan. Geomorphological information and GIS are used as a tool to identify the natural attributes and actual landslides in the area. The study also uses statistics to determine the weighting value that is related to trigering factors which affect landslides.
The study found that the main factors that cause landslides in the area include: low drainge density, the location of the site under 1000m above sea level, slope (more than 40%), and crops out of Ajloun group and Kurnub sandstone information. Results indicate that 33% of the built-up areas and the space surrounding it, 43.3% of the main and secondary roads, 26.4%of the current roads under construction (Ktherba – Southern Ghor) are located within the high and very high categories of susceptibility slides.
