Summary of the Research Project
It has become essential to utilize the latest development in computer technology, due to its great potentials to store huge amounts of data and digital geographical information as well as its ability to process such data, in order to analyze it to reach the desired objectives with ease and in a relatively shorter period of time when compared with the more traditional technologies and techniques.
This subject of this research project was Wadi Al-Majenin (River) and its Basins using the Morphometric approach and applying four parameters to identify the nature of the water drainage networks and eight parameters were used to gauge the types of Basin drainage and to measure the time spent from the aridity phase relying in this process on geographical information systems GIS and the remote sensing technology available at the Libyan Center for Remote Sensing and Aeronautics. Results obtained were verified by means of field observations made during actual visits to the area subject of the study.
Wadi Al-Mejenin is considered to be one of the dry-rivers system in the Western Mountains region of the Great Jamahiriya and runs in a contrasting rocky and shallow sandy formation environment in which the climate is predominantely semi-dry.
The Morphometric analysis applied to the Wadis (minor rivers) water drainage network, using topographic maps of 1: 50.000 scale and applying Horton laws and adopting the Strahler approach to the correlation between the number of Wadis (small rivers), their lenght and their order in terms of size and lenght, has shown that the river basin and its banks are distinct in the fact that the number of banks is small and that their lenght is short compared to the ideal standard measures of lenghts.
The results of the study conducted on the formation properties of the drainage basins by means of comparing their outline shape with the symetrical gymetrical layouts, show that the main Wadi Al-Mejenin river basin is of average (medium) circular while the minor river basins tend to be of triangular shape.
As of the period of time spent from the aridity phase, geographical properties of the river basins and the analysis of the hemispherical graphical curve and the hemispherical paramter, have indicated that aridity of the rivers is in its advance stages and also showed that Wadi Gaddaf Al-damm has reached its senility. As for the main Wadi and the other minor Wadis, they are still in their maturity phase of development.
The analysis of Linear curves of the Wadis under study has shown the appearance of five points of youth renewal (revitalization phases) which were correlated to five river bed levels which were in turn correlated with five rainy periods to which the study area was subjected to in the past.
