Abstract 

   Global concerns such as climate change and food security have focused renewed attention on the future of rural space. Although the direct engagement of rural geographers with climate change and food security has been limited to date, recent research in rural geography holds a number of lessons on these issues, highlighting, for example, spatial and social differentiation in the development of alternative food networks and the challenge of contested discourses of rurality to technocratic solutions to both food security and climate change. Through such perspectives, rural geography has a strong and distinctive contribution to make to research on both issues.

ABSTRACT 

  This review examines the development of research on gender within the broad arena of rural studies. It does so through four main themes: community, work, environment and sexuality. Drawing on work from a range of Western countries, the review shows how an early reluctance to engage with feminist research and work on gender more broadly has given way to a highly active, diverse and rich research direction in rural studies. The review selectively charts key phases in the development of rural gender studies and shows how research has moved from conceptualising rurality as ‘container’ for the creation, performance and contestation of gender roles to seeing the rural as integral to the actual construction of gender identities and to the ways they are performed and negotiated. As well as highlighting past research areas, the review suggests some directions for the future development of rural gender studies.

Abstract 

  Rural areas are increasingly thought of in terms of opportunity, as engines of growth in a world of economic uncertainty, they are being challenged in terms of their role in providing safe and secure food supplies, and they are being lauded and criticized in terms of climate change and mitigation. The multiple scales of these discussions, and the intensity and increased volume of rural debate that has emerged, see rural geographers occupy an interesting space in terms of conceptualizations, engagement and understanding of rural livelihoods and rural sustainability. Through the lens of agriculture and related spheres, the principal issues pertaining to agriculture as a sectoral activity and an instrument of rural and regional development, this report explores rural geographers’ critique of agriculture and small-scale farming in sustainable rural futures and the changing expectations and contradictions that currently abound.

  قام العديد من العلماء بتحليل دقيق للعلاقات الوظيفية بين الريف والحضر, ومن المعروف لكل باحث إن المدينة يحيط بها دائما نطاق من الأرض تخدمه وتعتمد علية فالمدينة لا يستطيع إن تعيش مكتفية بذاتها, معتمدة على مواردها الحضرية يقيمها فتقوم بأعمال لا بد تؤدي في أماكن مركزية (كما قال جيفرسون), فهناك تفاعل وثيق بين المدينة وريفها, ويتكون من مجموعة من الأفعال وردود الأفعال المتبادلة تنتهي بخلق مركب إقليمي متميز, وان إشعاع المدينة في الريف فيه انعكاس لتخصصها الوظيفي ولهذا لا يمكن إن نتصور الريف بلا مدينه أو المدينة بلا ريف.

جغرافية الأرياف : علم يهتم بدراسة الأرياف وأنشطتها الإقتصادية وكيفية توزيع المباني فيها وعلاقتها بالمدن وتطورها عبر الزمان والمكان وتاثيرها على المدينة أو العكس والهجرات منها وإليها وهي جزء من جغرافية السكان وجغرافية الفلاحة حيث تتركز غالبية الأنشطة الفلاحية بالأرياف التي تعد المزود الرئيسي للمدن باحتياجاتها الغذائية وفي الصناعة والتجهيز المنزلي اتجاه سكان العالم حاليا يربو نحو سكنى المدن في مختلف الأقطار، يقابله تناقص في نسبة سكان الريف، مما يوحي بأن سكان العالم في طريقهم ليتحولوا جميعاً إلى سكان مدن.
