Impact of Soil Texture on Nitrate
Leaching into Groundwater
in Khanyounis Governorate
A study in Soil Geography
Abstract:
This study aims to determine the impact of soil texture on nitrate (NO3) leaching risk to the groundwater wells, which are used for agricultural purposes in Khanyounis Governorate (the study area). Hence 70 samples of agricultural soils, and 70 samples of agricultural water wells are collected and analyzed in the laboratories of the Ministry of Agriculture and Al-Azhar University in order to determine the soil texture, and the percentage of nitrates in both soil and groundwater.
This study has shown that there are four types of soils, the sandy soil, loamy sand, sandy loam, and sandy clay loam. It is found that the element of sand is prevalent in all soil samples, which shows the impact of soil texture on groundwater contamination .with nitrate element.
The study concludes that when the proportion of sand increases, and the proportion of clay decreases in soil, the percentage of nitrates in it declined and increased in the groundwater, and vice versa. As well as hydraulic properties of soil of are determined according to United States Department of Agriculture, where the results show the existence of a relationship between these properties and soil texture according to results of the analysis.
