the title of Settlement Changes in Kom Ombo Plain By Using Remote Sensing and the Geographical Information System
The thesis is dividing into five chapters preceded by an introduction and ends with a conclusion. The introduction and the chapters are arranged as follows:
A general introduction
In this part identification of the study area, and the reasons for selecting it, as well as theme have been dealt with. Previous studies, objectives, approach, procedures are well explained. Procedures include theory, collection of scientific materials from published and unpublished sources, acquiring maps and satellite images, field study, statistical analysis and writing the manuscript.
The first chapter
Areas and Morphological Changes of Settlements in the Kom-Ombo Plain
In this chapter, land cover maps for the years 1972, 1988, 1998, and 2009 were prepared using Landsat satellite images.
Urban settlements were extracted to define the volume and trends of urban growth between 1972-2009. Problems produced from urban growth in the study area were also studied.
The second chapter
Natural geographical constrains for the settlements in the Kom Ombo plain
In this chapter, impacts of the geological and topographical features, soil, climate, and water resources on the extent of urbanization in the plain of Kom Ombo have been dealt with. Characteristics and suitability of settlement were also discussed.
The third chapter
Changes of the distribution of the settlement in the plain of Kom Ombo
This chapter deals with the characteristics of the spatial distribution of urban settlements in the plain of Kom Ombo from central and marginal areas. Natural and human factors affecting the distribution of settlement in the plain of Kom Ombo were discussed.
The fourth chapter
Demographic changes in the plain of Kom Ombo
The sizes of towns and villages of the rural and urban settlement in the Kom Ombo plain were calculated and the changes from (1976-2006) were evaluated. The changes in composition of population based on age, type and economic and educational status were also calculated and discussed.
The fifth chapter
Problems and future development of settlement in the plain of Kom Ombo
Problems of settlement environment and strategy for urban development in the plain of Kom Ombo were discussed and a model for selecting the most appropriate sites for urban development in the plain have been proposed utilizing remote sensing techniques and geographic information systems.
The conclusion
The study of the settlement changes in Kom Ombo plain
Have dealt with all matters relating to patterns of human distribution, and pointed to the role of geological structure and its significant impact on the distribution of urbanization in the Kom Ombo Plain, and view the results of the study of the spatial distribution of rural and urban settlements in the Kom Ombo Plain, the changes in population sizes of the region has doubled over the study period (1976-2006), and is a reflection of rapid population growth. The study also revealed the extent of variation between the sizes of population of villages and cities of the plain, and shows the concentration of population in particular villages.
This indicates that the distribution is not balanced with respect to the administrative boundaries.
The satellite imagery uses found to be successful in providing accurate and near real-time data to the land cover land use and monitor the changes of urban growth in different periods of time, whether those changes are in the spatial distribution or morphology.
The study showed that the large cities and the cities close to roads and transportation facilities attract high number of citizens working in the Kom Ombo Plain. Finally, the study established a model for site selection for urban settlement and proposed the suitable sites for future urban planning.
