Boone County GIS

The Boone County Planning Commission began its Geographic Information System (GIS) in 1993. As of the printing of this document, this GIS services more than 800 staff members employed by every public sector entity that operates within Boone County. The Boone County Planning Commission’s GIS is a vital tool for these entities, providing valuable insight into Boone County. Having so many entities utilize the same system creates a foundation for these entities to communicate, collaborate, coordinate and cooperate on a multitude of initiatives.
The residents and businesses of Boone County benefit in many ways from the existence of the GIS. One benefit that is often taken for granted is simply the enabling of decision makers employed by these public sector entities to make more informed decisions. It is often said that “a picture is worth a thousand words”. Nowhere is this sentiment truer than in how Geographic Information Systems are applied within local government in Boone County, Kentucky.
