Abstract:
The study examines the assessment of the soil’s appropriateness for agricultural activity in the Western plateau region within Haditha district in Iraq and then the construction of digital cartographic models of this appropriateness through the use of modern techniques (Geomatics) based on a set of specific criteria for each model. The first model is based on the physical and chemical properties of the soil. It produced three levels of soil’s appropriateness for agriculture. The most appropriate areas were near the river, Haditha’s lake and the Western and South Western parts, which have an area of 365 km2. The level of average appropriateness extended to an area of 476 km2. The level of least appropriateness has an area of about 566 km 2 of the total area and centered in the north eastern part of the province.
The second model, which includes more comprehensive criteria to assess the appropriateness of the soil for agriculture, is represented with the final result of the first model with the soil varieties according to the classification of Bjornk and land cover varieties with the density of vegetation. Also it resulted in three levels according to the appropriatenes: the first level was the most appropriate that extended to an area bigger than the area of the first level of the first model withan area of (275) km 2, while the second level has (468) km 2, and the third level amounted to (664) km 2 of the total area.
