  المرأة.. تلك الهبة التي وهبها الله برقتها وحنانها.. فهي الأم وهي الأخت وهي الزوجة وهي البنت، وهي تعتبر مصدر الأمان والاستقرار العاطفي في محيطها الأسري، فهي تحتوي الرجل والأبناء، غير أن الشعور بالصد، ومرارة الظروف القاهرة هي الشرارة القابلة للاشتعال، والتي تدفع بالمرأة إلى وضع رقتها جانبا لتنفيذ ما تمليه عليها عواطفها. ورغم ازدياد الاهتمام بالمرأة في القرن العشرين، إلا أن مشكلة المرأة والجريمة لم تنل مثل هذا الاهتمام، فيما عدا بعض البحوث التي لا يزيد عددها على أصابع اليد الواحدة اجري معظمها في أوروبا والولايات المتحدة الأمريكية، فإن جرائم النساء ظلت من الأمور التي يحيطها ما يحيط بالمرأة أحياناً من غموض أو ما تلقاه من اللامبالاة والإهمال.

   وقد كانت البداية الحقيقية للاهتمام بجرائم النساء سنة 1906م بصدور كتابين أحدهما للعالم الفرنسي جرانييه Grannier بعنوان المرأة المجرمة والآخر للعالم الايطالي الطبيب لمبروزو Lombroso بعنوان المرأة المجرمة والعاهرة. ولم تنشر مؤلفات في هذا الموضوع فيما عدا دراسة العالم الأمريكي بولاك Pollak عن إجرام النساء وبعض المقالات والبحوث المنشورة في المجلات العلمية المتخصصة، أو المقدمة للمؤتمرات المنعقدة لمناقشة الظاهرة الإجرامية بصفة عامة.

  ويعد إجرام النساء أحد أبعاد الإجرام المعاصر في العالم وقد ازداد في الآونة الأخيرة في البلدان النامية والمتقدمة على حد سواء كنتيجة غير مباشرة لاندماج المرأة تدريجياً في دائرة نشاط أكثر اتساعا في ميادين العمل ومنافسة الرجال.

  وإذا كان الإجرام سابقا صفة ذكورية وما ارتكبته النساء يكاد يعتبر استثناءا، إلا أن الجزائر تشهد أمرا خطيرا يتمثل في إقبال العنصر النسوي على ارتكاب الجرائم على اختلافها، كما لو أن الأمر يتعلق بالعنف المضاد أو عملية انتقام، حيث لم تعد المرأة ضحية العنف والجريمة فحسب وإنما ممارسة لها.

   First published in 1936, this book surveys the changing place of women across the contemporaneous Muslim world, focusing on several nations where they constitute a demographic majority — Iraq, Iran, Egypt, Palestine, Trans-Jordan, Turkey, Syria — and one where they do not, namely India. It begins by outlining some of the areas of change, for example regarding the veil, purdah and divorce. This is followed by in depth examinations of the progress of female education, their changing economic roles, improving health standards, their widening interests and the pressure for change on Islam in general. This title is would be of interest to students of the sociology of religion and the contemporary position of women in Muslim societies.

Abstract 

  This thesis brings together two important developments in contemporary geography; firstly, the recognition of the need to write critical histories of geographical thought and, particularly, the relationship between modern geography and European imperialism, and secondly, the attempt by feminist geographers to countervail the absence of women in these histories. Drawing on recent innovative attempts by geographers to construct alternative, contextual perspectives in (re)writing histories of geographical thought, the thesis analyzes the travel narratives of British women travellers in West Africa between 1840 and 1915. Recent attempts by feminists to include women in histories of geography and imperialism have, all too often, failed to analyze critically the role of women in imperial culture, or have reproduced gender dichotomies in their analysis. This thesis seeks to overcome these problems in three ways. Firstly, it explores the contributions of women travellers to imperial culture, primarily through their production of popular geographies. Secondly, it analyzes the ways in which these women were empowered in the imperial context by virtue of both race and class. Thirdly, it frames the accounts of each woman within the specific spatial and temporal context of their journeys in order to explore the complexities in the popular geographies they produced. The thesis illustrates that while gender was an important factor in the construction of images in the travel narratives of Victorian women travellers, this cannot be divorced from the wider context of their journey, nor from other elements in power relations based on difference such as race and class. Using this framework, the study explores in detail the production of popular geographies of the landscapes and peoples of West Africa by British women travellers, and formulates an argument on how women and their experiences can be included in histories of geographical thought.

Introduction 

   Feminism exists to critically and self-reflexively examine regimes of power at work in everyday life. Through attention to social differences, such as gender, race, class, ethnicity, age, ability, and sexuality, feminist geography highlights the significance of difference in shaping experiences of space and place. Feminist geography emerged in the 1980s as a move within geography that took two primary directions. First, to open the discipline up to more female geographers, through more equitable hiring processes and attempts to shift oppressive departmental cultures.
