Abstract
The research aimed to determine the spatial suitability of agricultural land uses in the Sheikhan District, using the Geographic Information Systems program and its accessories represented by the toolbox.
(Arc Tool box) and spatial analysis tools, including the Suitability Analysis tools and the Model Builder application, where spatial and descriptive databases were built and corrected and linked to each other to form a database specific to the Sheikhan district and ready for the spatial analysis process.
The problem of the research was that the investment of land in the Sheikhan District is not carried out according to an approach based on following spatial suitability for growing agricultural crops in the Sheikhan District, and the lack of maps in the Sheikhan District that can be used in geographical studies and planning, especially at the agricultural level. Therefore, the research was directed To survey and inventory the human and natural geographical potential of the district, and thus a geographic database was prepared for the natural and human potential available in the district, and to evaluate the spatial suitability of agricultural land uses in the district based on modern geographical techniques and the multi-criteria decision-making methodology (MCDM), and to extract the weights of the human and natural variables affecting the district. This was done by relying on the classification of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in determining levels and classes of suitability through implicit integrations between geographic information systems, statistics, and spatial decision support systems, as well as developing tools in the geographic information systems program to evaluate suitability. land for crop cultivation, leading to determining the best use of the land according to the data obtained, classifying and evaluating the suitability of lands for growing general agricultural crops in the district, and then knowing the reality of agricultural crop cultivation and the suitability levels of each crop and their geographical distribution in the district, relying on a model.
( Runak Agriculture Suitability) in the (AGLA) program, which is the first research in Iraq and the Arab world to adopt this program and model in determining the suitability of agricultural crop cultivation, as this program includes a standardized model within indicators of the requirements of each crop according to the standards and indicators of the FAO and access to Results: This research ended with the construction of a cloud geographic information base, where spatial documents of the levels of suitability of agricultural land for agricultural crops were uploaded to the Onlien ARC GIS platform.
Maps of land suitability types for growing crops revealed a number of facts, namely that the district enjoys fertile land with good and average types of land suitability for agricultural production, and that the uses of agricultural land in the Sheikhan district varied between unsuitable lands for growing crops in the northern regions and suitable lands. Few areas in the mountains, medium suitability in undulating areas, and high suitability in plain areas .
This research presented proposals, the most important of which was after building a spatial and descriptive database on the capabilities of the judiciary with its natural and human resources, on the basis of which various levels of cultivation of general agricultural crops were reached and the suitability of the levels and varieties of each agricultural crop. Therefore, decision-makers must contribute to maximizing the cultivated areas and Increasing agricultural production in quantity and quality by investing all available natural resources in the district in order to build a sustainable agricultural system.
